Forklift Accident at Auckland Trade Depot Leads to Amputation and Safety Concerns

One News reported a forklift accident at a Trade Depot in Auckland which left a woman with a permanent disability and sparked questions about workplace safety. The woman, who was waiting to collect whiteware, was struck by a forklift and suffered severe injuries, resulting in the amputation of her leg below the knee.

Following an investigation by WorkSafe, it was revealed that Trade Depot had failed to implement an adequate traffic management plan.

This critical oversight allowed forklifts to operate in close proximity to pedestrians, creating a dangerous environment. The lack of proper separation between moving vehicles and pedestrians directly contributed to the accident.

WorkSafe responded to the incident by issuing improvement notices to Trade Depot. These notices mandated the creation of a physical barrier to segregate pedestrians from forklifts and other moving vehicles within the facility. Additionally, Trade Depot was hit with a significant financial penalty of $350,000. The woman who sustained the life-altering injury was also awarded reparations of $141,502.12.

This tragic event serves as a stark reminder of the importance of prioritizing safety in workplaces that utilize forklifts.

WorkSafe emphasizes the necessity of proper traffic management plans to ensure the safety of both employees and visitors. These plans should establish clear designated zones for pedestrians and forklifts, and implement physical barriers to prevent accidental contact.

Furthermore, forklift operators must be properly trained and licensed. Employers have a responsibility to ensure that all operators are aware of safety protocols and adhere to them at all times. This includes obeying speed limits, maintaining awareness of surroundings, and exercising caution when operating forklifts near pedestrians.

The Trade Depot accident in Auckland underscores the devastating consequences that can arise from lapses in workplace safety. By prioritizing clear demarcations, designated zones, and comprehensive training, similar tragedies can be prevented.
